Disclaimer: not all restaurants in town are listed, usually due to a lack
of reviews. Efforts to rec- tify this situation should be directed to any
of the authors. For each eatery listed, an address and tele- phone number

public. A rough estimate of price is given where known. In addition, the
following symbols are used to indicate the loca- tion and other various
features:

The Commentators:
We wish to thank the following people for their assistance in preparing this guide. How much
you trust their opinions is, of course, a matter of taste.
A note on the Claremont:
The only restaurant outside the hotel within a half mile is The Station
(see American Short), about one block down Ashby from the hotel. A bakery,
a produce store, and a liquor store (Jackson's-- also claims to sell deli
food) are in the same general area. AC Transit bus #65 goes to/from
southside and downtown Berkeley; it stops on Domingo in front of the
bakery (fare is 25\(ct).
A note on the drought:
Restaurants in the Bay Area will only serve you water if you ask for it.
American Short

848-8559
Ptomaine special [MCU
Oscar's 1890 Shattuck (DT) 849-2164
A non-franchise in McDonald's genre. [RJF
The Terrace Upstairs near the Student Union
(OC,lunch only,breakfast)
No. [BE π \(bu π Food standard institutional, but a nice
place to sit outside and watch the plaza below. [BWC
The Cafeteria Downstairs near the Student Union
(OC,lunch only)
Still no. [BE
The Bear's Lair Downstairs at the Student Union

BE
Chinese
The Cheshire Cat 1839 Euclid Ave. 845-8707
Cheap American-Chinese food. Go to Dynasty across
the street [WJS π \(bu π Buy the Luncheon special if you're in
a hurry [MCU π \(bu π Ugh [RMK π \(bu π Menu OK, steam
table trash. [EMG
Caf \(aa es
These all serve espresso, cappuchino, and
caf \(aa e au lait, and usually sell baked goods to go
with coffee. More ambitious fare served where
noted.
Caffe Espresso 2481 Hearst (NS) 845-0050
Also pizza and Italian food, sandwiches, desserts.
La Salamandra 2516 Telegraph (SS) 841-9070
Has entertainment upon occasion. [BE
Blimpie (SS [see Sandwiches)
OK caf \(aa e au lait. [BE
Delis
Warning: If you are from NY any of
these will be extremely disappointing [WJS
Curds and Whey 6311 College 652-6311
Expensive, overly impressed with themselves. [BE
French, Continental
Ice Cream, Dessert
The Frozen Yogurt Store (SS,TO)
Good, but Blimpies has Dreyer's (which is much
better). [BE
Swenson's 1854 Euclid (NS,TO) 841-6374 \(sq 2530
Durant (SS,TO) 845-8544
Prices a mite steep, but many exotic selections. I prefer it
to Baskin Robbins. Try Swiss orange chip. [RJF π \(bu π The
only ice cream stores with the Leslie Singer stamp of
approval. [BE
Old Uncle Gaylord's 2566 Telegraph (late night,SS) 845-
7087 \(sq 1549 Hopkins (late night,SS) 526-2109
Eh. [BE π \(bu π You have to like all-natural ingredients
in order to like this type of ice cream. No stabilizers, higher
butterfat, "homemade". It grows on you. [BWC
Bott's 2977 College (TO) 848-3578
Unpretentious. Low prices. Try bittersweet chocolate,
fresh lemon. [RJF π \(bu π This is the best ice cream in
Berkeley. [HRK π \(bu π No it's not. [LMS
Good Times 2430 Durant Ave (SS) 848-6470
Serves Bud's ice cream, which is produced in San Fran-
cisco and shipped over. I think it's good, but Leslie doesn't
agree..... [BE
Dreyer's 5929 College (late night) 655-8187
Invented Rocky Road ice cream (although Swenson's
R.R. is better). They make really good frozen yogurt (try the
blueberry). [BE π \(bu π A sit-down parlor. The closest to the
Claremont except for Baskin-Robbins. Well-made sundaes,
splits, shakes, etc. [BWC
The Ice Creamery Downstairs at the Student Union
(lunch only,OC)
Prices are as good as Botts; although larger selection,
servings are smaller. Get dessert here if you are in the area
and in the mood. [RJF
McCallum's 1825 Solano Ave. 525-3751
Good for large groups. [EMG
Fenton's 4226 Piedmont Ave., Oakland (late night-
midnight) 658-4948
They have great hot fudge sundaes. [BWC π \(bu π As in
"large": sundaes guaranteed to be unfinishable. [BE
Ortman's 1799 Solano 526-9830
Not worth a special trip, but if you are shopping on
Solano and need a place to stop for lunch, it is a clean place
with simple well-prepared sandwiches. Good for kids. [RJF
Eclair Pastries 2468 Telegraph 848-4221
Other shops come and go on the Avenue, but the Eclair
has earned permanence. No ice cream, just cookies, cakes,
pies .... [BWC

2513 Dwight Way (SS,TO) 841-7171
Truly excellent pizza. No seating [WJS π \(bu π They have
Sicilian and Neopolitan style pizza. The Sicilian with cheese
only was delectably crusty, but oddly lacked real taste. [BWC
Carolina (SS,TO)
Like Arinell's. [BWC π \(bu π But not as good. [EMG
Salerno (DT-see Italian)
Pizza very good [PL π \(bu π Pizza okay [BWC, BE
Pirro's (DT-see Italian)
Pizza greasy, spicy, gooey [BWC

Pizza is about as good as you can get east of the
Hudson. [MCU π \(bu π Good pizza, but on the greasy side. [
BWC
LaVal's (NS-see Italian)
Pizza is about as good as you can get on Euclid ave. [
MCU π \(bu π Not recommended. [BE π \(bu π The pizza at Caffe

Pizza Man 2366 San Pablo 849-2884

Arinells) [WJS
New Sunshine 3891 Piedmont Ave 658-5888
Delicately flavored sauce makes the difference. [CP
Sandwiches
Blimpies 2576 Bancroft Way (SS) 848-4745
This is a franchise, but you may not have seen others.
Specializing in long soggy-bread type hero or sub (or blimp, I
suppose) sandwiches, having several kinds of sauce, onions,
plus choice of meats, cheeses. If you are hungry for starch.
Strangely enough, they also serve pastries, espresso, Italian
soft drinks, and a variety of nice things. Presumably for the
evening crowd. The sandwiches would probably ruin your
palate for 2 hours. [RJF π \(bu π The sandwiches can't com-
pare with East Coast subs, but it's the only place near campus
that attempts to make them ($1.50) [BWC π \(bu π Ignore the
other disparaging remarks [the sandwiches are good and rea-
sonably priced. Their desserts are made across the bay at Just
Desserts, a deli that sells only that. Try the carrot cake (or the
baklava, or their black bottom cupcakes, or the banana
bread, or the frozen yogurt ......) [BE π \(bu π What BWC
doesn't know is that it is an East Coast franchise. Blimps,
even in the East, are rather unique. [MCU π \(bu π Now wait a
minute Mike, I have been in Blimpies in the East. [BWC
